Diverse Personalities and Due Diligence

The most critical aspect of leadership quality should be people management rather than task completion, based on my experience. Tasks can indeed be completed by leaders of various types, though with different timelines. However, the significant distinction lies in effective people management.

Drawing from my own leadership experience of the past four years, I’ve realized that knowing how to work with people is incredibly important. I’ve received positive feedback from the teams I’ve led, who find my approach effective. Over time, I’ve learned a lot from different situations, which has shaped my unique leadership style.

As leaders, we interact with people who have all sorts of personalities every day. Each person is different, so it’s important to adjust your approach. This article will explore specific personality traits and ways to handle them. This is the first in a series where I’ll delve into different traits and how to manage them, one trait at a time. I might not be a psychology expert, but my four years of leadership experience have given me plenty of insights. Let’s get started with the first one.

Imagine there’s someone we’ll call “A” who always seeks attention by not following the usual hierarchy. They try to show they’re in charge among their peers but often struggle. They also want to impress their superiors.

The leadership approach for handling such a situation involves assigning tasks that allow individuals to showcase their skills and remain engaged. Communication should strictly adhere to professional standards, with directness being crucial when necessary. It’s vital to maintain a firm stance while still affording them the freedom to execute tasks in their preferred style. Furthermore, supporting their interactions with superiors through your involvement can prove advantageous.

Making sure A is happy with their work involves giving them tasks they like, so they won’t blame others. By reducing personal chats, you create a professional environment. Being firm stops them from taking over and connecting them with higher-ups makes them feel valued. This approach can make them satisfied, reduce any bossy behavior, and keep them focused on their work. I believe this helps.

Stay tuned for another personality trait next week.
